Let's Call The Whole Thing Off
This activity allows teachers to use Gershwin's "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off" sung by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong as a stepping stone introducing Linguistics in their classes. It includes the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) which students can get used to when trying to identify the spelling of sounds and discuss the differences in pronunciation. Which of these "Englishes" is right? Is there a "proper" English at all? Which standards define "good" or "proper" English? How come there are so many forms of English in the world? Are there other forms of our native language(s) as well?
